Japan has many themed cafe experiences that will leave you joyful and relaxed. From the popular Kirby cafe to animal cafes, immerse yourself in unique environments and enjoy a cozy beverage. Read on to know what to expect and prepare your bucket list accordingly.

The Kirby Cafe

The Kirby Cafe in Japan is a cozy gamer's paradise. This cafe has three locations: Tokyo, Osaka, and Hakata. The decor and menu items are Kirby-themed, making for the perfect kawaii experience. There's also a gift store to bring memorable souvenirs from your trip back home. Customers recommend booking a reservation about a month in advance, as it's a popular spot. The Kirby Cafe has evergreen and seasonal items, so there's always something new to try! Some reviews describe the food as ordinary and lacking flavor, but the fantastic atmosphere and cute presentation make it worth visiting.

Maid Cafes

What are Japan's Maid Cafes? Maid cafes were born in 2001 and are shaped by anime and manga. Staff dress up as maids, greet you as "master" or "princess", embody special characters, and often serve food with cute designs. Some cafes offer photo sessions, dances, or games. We recommend reading up on the maid cafe you're considering visiting to know what to expect before going.

Pokémon Cafe

If you're ready to catch 'em all, visit the Pokémon Cafe in Osaka or Tokyo, Japan. The cafe offers themed food, live performances, and exclusive merchandise. From "Snorlax's Tummy Filling Nap Lunch Plate" to "Pikachu and Charmander's Best Friends Forever Curry Plate", enjoy creative meals. There's an online reservation system, but customers mention difficulties with it, so you might have to try your luck multiple times.

Hello Kitty Cafe

The Sanrio Cafe is a must for Hello Kitty fans visiting Japan. Immerse yourself in cozy decor and enjoy food decorated with all your favourite characters. Like the Kirby cafe, reviews are mixed on the food, but the presentation makes the experience enjoyable. Be prepared for wait times as the cafe is quite popular. You can also order from the takeout menu to avoid long lines.

Ghibli Cafe

You can find a Ghibli Cafe in Tokyo! The Shiro-Hige's Cream Puff Factory is a delight for Ghibli lovers. They serve Totoro cream puffs with various flavours such as custard and chocolate. The owner of the factory is also Miyazaki's sister in law. Make sure to come early in the day as these delicious treats sell out fast. The cafe is located in a quiet area where you can cozy up with your treat and a warm drink.

Rescue Animal Cafes in Japan

Cat Cafe in Tokyo, JapanRescue Cat Cafe Meooow!

If you want to enjoy your coffee in the presence of furry friends, you can find ethical neko cafes (cat cafes) in Japan. Make sure they're rescue cafes that take care of strays and encourage adoption, rather than cafes where you're simply paying to play with someone's pets. These have ethical concerns as the animals tend to feel crowded without space to retreat to.

Look for rescue cafes like Rescue Cat Cafe Meooow! to support pets finding loving homes.

Animal Cafes to Avoid

There are lots of animal cafes in Tokyo, such as capybara and owl cafes. However, there are ethical concerns about these types of cafes, as they involve wildlife or exotic animals that should not be in captivity, animals that shouldn't be in close contact with humans, or animals that might be shy and need personal space, like cats.

Here are the things to look out for that indicate the cafe isn't ethical:

  • The animals are not meant to be in contact with humans due to diseases that we can spread to them.
  • The animals are wild animals that should not be kept in captivity.
  • The cafe is overcrowded and doesn't have a cap on visitors.
  • The cafe speaks of the animals as if they're objects.
  • The cafe doesn't have options for the animals to retreat. This also applies to cats and some dogs, who don't always want to be around humans all day.
  • Staff encourages touching and holding animals for pictures.

If you're looking for experiences where animals can roam more freely, check these out:

  • Visit the Deer in Nara Park: The deer of Nara have lived in the area for over 1300 years. While they have freedom to roam in their natural habitat, there are still concerns about their well-being, especially when visitors do not interact with them with care.

Note: If you decide to visit, never feed them human food and keep a respectful distance. You can feed them the deer "cookies" that you can purchase from vendors in Nara, but don't overfeed, or tease them.
